It could be seen as an investment, as its never likely to become faulty, and if taken care of, will last many years. Totally reliable, made to exacting Swiss standards, and reassuringly expensive. This is why the Thommen Classic has remained ever so popular in the mountaineering circles, that require the use of such instruments. The majority of altimeters used by the public, are battery digital affairs, fine in decent weather, but when temperatures really plummet, battery life will be always an issue. The Thommen Classic altimeter, is certainly not a cheap mass market affair, its like a Swiss watch, incredibly well made and put together. Two of them stand on a shelf in my bedroom, providing daily indication of barometric pressure change, the other is still in it's presentation box, intended as a gift, but could not bare to part with it. I already own three various Thommen Altimeters reading the altitude in both meters and feet, so i have years of experience with the use of these stunningly beautiful mechanical instruments.
